This! “It’s time to get mad”

It's hard to sit here and not feel feminist.  It's hard to sit here and not be angry and disgusted.  In this time of progression and development society still refuses to  acknowledge a woman’s worth and these Olympics are proving that more than I ever could’ve imagined.  We are taking the most athletically capable women in the world and minimizing them to their surface value.

Sha’carri Richardson was forced under a microscope due to her appearance; constantly scrutinized for wanting to express her color and culture while still excelling at being one of the top ten fastest women in the world at only nineteen.  Her talent was never what took main stage though, only how people felt about how she looked.

Simone Biles became the first woman to complete a Yurchenko double pike, a skill that even men shy away from attempting, but was given only a 6.6 due to officials being embarrassed by the gap her skills created and attempting to close it.

Then there is the Norwegian women’s handball team being fined 1,500 euros for showing up wearing shorts instead of bikini bottoms, officials calling it ‘a case of improper clothing’ because the women’s bottoms are not to exceed more than 10cm on any side.  TEN CENTIMETERS.

Why.

Why is this the example we are setting for our young women.  Why are these the double standards that women are still being subjected to.

‘Look good but only in the ways we want you to.’

‘Be the best but not better than everyone else.’

‘Be a role model but only based on our rules.’

All I can see is hypocrisy.  The system continues to fail women, even ones as outstanding as these ladies are and its time to be mad about it.  Our women are worth so much more than watered down looks and small waisted wedgies.

It’s time to get mad.- Katelynne Kelm
